Origins and General Information on the Naval Aviation History Office/Branch

The Naval Aviation History Office was established in January 1942 under the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air. In 1986 it became a branch of the Naval Historical Center with additional duties as aviation history support for Director, Air Warfare.
The Naval Aviation History Office maintains an archive of documents on U.S. Naval Aviation; conducts research; and writes books, monographs and articles on the history of Naval Aviation. Since its inception, the office has been closely associated with Naval Aviation News magazine.
The office serves the Navy by providing historical information on Naval Aviation. It places a priority on official requests. The general public is welcome to send written requests or to visit our facility in person. Due to staff reductions, the office only responds to official government phone requests. All other requests must be submitted in writing. Extensive personal research requests are beyond the scope of the office. The general public should submit their requests to Naval Historical Center, Naval Aviation History Branch, 805 Kidder Breese SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. 20374-5060. Processing time for reference requests is 4 to 8 weeks.
