Publications and General Information
Ongoing publications of the Early History Branch include two documentary series, Naval Documents of the American Revolution, edited by William Bell Clark, William James Morgan, and Michael J. Crawford (1964 ; 9 volumes to date) and The Naval War of 1812: A Documentary History, edited by William S. Dudley, Michael J. Crawford, and others (1985 ; 2 volumes to date).
These series are based on the branch's extensive collection of microfilms and copies gathered from the United States and abroad. In addition to these long-range projects, the branch also produces briefing papers, articles, and brochures, and has published The Reestablishment of the Navy: Historical Overview and Bibliography and The Spanish American War: Historical Overview and Select Bibliography as Nos. 4 and 5 in the Naval Historical Center's bibliographic series on naval history. The branch verifies official Navy manuscripts for historical accuracy and assists scholars, researchers, and anyone interested in America's naval past by directing them to appropriate resources.
