World War II Command File,
1939-1945

Scope and Content Note

In addition to reports, war diaries, and planning documents, a large body of miscellaneous printed, processed, and record material relating to World War II was collected by the Operational Archives and placed in this artificial collection. Some documents predating the war are also present. The records in this group are filed by originating command.

Although most of this material is U.S. Navy originated, some was produced by other services or by foreign sources. Articles and reminiscences written by naval personnel and by others on naval topics are included. Some examples of the types of documents in these files are: Annual Reports; Anti-Submarine Warfare Bulletins, 1943-1945; Battle Analysis Series; Combat Narrative Series; Communique and Press Releases, 1942-1945; Composition of Task Forces, 1942-1945; Fleet Organization Lists, 1940-1945; Fleet Tactical Publications; Location Lists of Ships and Aircraft, 1939-1945; Naval Participant Interviews; Operations in the Pacific Area, 1943-1945; Organization Manuals for individual commands; Rosters of individual commands, 1939-1945; unpublished or formerly classified histories; and ship newspapers.

Many of the histories are described in the Partial Checklist of World War II Histories and Historical Reports in the U.S. Naval History Division (Washington: Defense Printing Service, 1973).
