Scope and Content Note

These papers relate to the naval service of Fred H. Spiess, a sonar operator on Submarine Chaser 331 during World War I. The collection is comprised of biographical data and a diary that he kept from 11 May 1917 through 23 February 1919. The 49 glass slides relating to his naval service on SC 331 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during 1918 are held in the Curator Branch, Photographic Section.
