Scope and Content Note
Letters comprise the bulk of this collection and document Electronics Technician Scott Smith's assignment with the Kwajalein Ship Security Detail in the Marshall Islands from January 1948 through July 1949. In addition to his letters, the collection includes biographical information, clippings, photographs, and miscellany.
The Kwajalein Ship Security Detail (KSSD) was established to take care of the target ships used in the atomic-bomb tests on Bikini Atoll. Rad Safe, part of KSSD, was established to monitor the radioactivity of the target ships and ensure that safety precautions were observed. Smith's duties with Rad Safe included servicing the instruments that were used to check the radioactivity of the target ships.
