Scope and Content Note
This collection contains materials relating to Vice Admiral Lorenzo Sabin's service in Vietnam from 1954 through 1963. From July 1954 to April 1955, he commanded the sea forces of Operation Passage to Freedom in which over 310,000 Vietnamese people and more than 57,000 tons of U.S. origin military equipment were transported in U.S. ships from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. During this period he had personal contact with leading officials of the U.S., French, and Vietnamese governments, including the President of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem.
Historical materials in the collection include correspondence, messages, papers and reports on Operation Passage to Freedom, and newspaper clippings of his naval service in the Dominican Republic in 1957. Miscellany in the collection includes a court decree from the Texas Republic period (1843) and materials relating to World War II.
