Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a large
body of miscellaneous printed and manuscript materials relating to the Post
World War II period through 1973. Starting in 1959, commands were required to
submit annual histories, which are filed in the collection along with publications
and other serial type materials and miscellaneous documents and manuscripts
originated by or pertaining to the command. Examples of the types of materials
include:

Although most of the collection is
U.S. Navy originated, some documentation was prepared by other services, by foreign
navies, by research organizations under government contract, or by private individuals.
While this collection contains a quantity of material concerning the Vietnam War,
there is an additional collection of Vietnam materials that was established while
Naval Historical Center historians were writing an official history of the conflict.
This collection is known as the Vietnam Command File and is organized similarly
to the Post 1946 Command File. There is some duplication of documents of documents
between the two.
