Biographical Note
Admiral Thomas Kinkaid commanded a task group at the battles of Coral Sea and Midway in 1942, a task force in the campaign for Guadalcanal, the North Pacific Force that recaptured the Aleutian Islands in 1943, and the Seventh Fleet in the Southwest Pacific from 1943 to 1945. He took the surrender of Japanese forces in mainland China and Korea, and commanded the Eastern Sea Frontier until his retirement in 1950.
Scope and Content Note
In addition to personal and official correspondence, speeches, and publications, this collection includes a diary (1939-1941), a partial autobiographical manuscript tracing Kinkaid's career through 1942, subject files on the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and personal letters to his wife while he was overseas. Documentation on Kinkaid's post-retirement career is also present. An oral history with Kinkaid can be found in the Oral History Collection.
