Scope and Content Note
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, a board of five Navy captains and one Marine Corps colonel attempted to produce a declassified version of the operational records of World War II under the security rules then in effect. They studied all of the diaries and reports for a given operation and masked out classified matters, otherwise leaving the narratives intact. Each page was microfilmed and the original documents returned to the Archives. Technical matters, such as date and time groups on messages, speeds of advance, radar distance, and time and rates of replenishment were deleted during redaction.
