Biographical Note

While serving with the Navy, Dale was captured on Lexington in 1777. Subsequently imprisoned in Mill Prison, England, he escaped to France. Dale returned to service as Master's Mate under John Paul Jones in 1778, and served as First Lieutenant on Bon Homme Richard during her engagement with Serapis on 23 Sept. 1779. From 1781 to 1782, he commanded Queen of France, and in 1801 took command of the Mediterranean Squadron in operations against Tripoli.

Scope and Content Note

Correspondence and log books of Commodore Richard Dale, including his commissions and a book kept while in Mill Prison. The original manuscripts are now at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress. Photocopies are maintained with the Operational Archives' personal papers collections.
