Scope and Content Note
This collection contains Captain Colbert's orders and other official correspondence, arranged in chronological order. The first series of orders are unusual in that they were issued by the Secretary of the Navy, frequently appointing, revoking, and reappointing Colbert to the position of Paymaster Clerk. There are also orders signed by Josephus Daniels and Franklin D. Roosevelt after the function had been taken over by the Bureau of Navigation. The collection was also used in the writing of Captain Colbert's book, A Sailor's Gift to His Family.
Preferred Citation
This collection should be cited as Papers of William C. Colbert, Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center, Washington, D.C.
