Scope and Content Note

This collection contains information relating to the loss of USS Thresher (SSN-593) in 1963 and USS Scorpion (SSN-589) in 1968. It includes a background history of nuclear submarine losses, reports on environmental monitoring of disaster site fuel leakage, Finding of Fact studies on possible causes of the disasters, photos, and a videotape the ALVIN underwater search device.
