Scope and Content Note

Prior to its disestablishment in 1974, the Biographies Branch prepared accounts of the careers of senior naval officers. Normally these files document individuals with the rank of Captain or above, but in some cases officers of lower rank are included. The biographies were based upon data sheets submitted by the officers themselves, transcripts of service prepared from an officer's jacket, press clippings, and other sources. The Operational Archives continues to add information on both officers and enlisted personnel to these files from biographies submitted with command histories, news clippings, and donated material.
