Scope and Content Note
The Operational Archives assembled this collection from a variety of sources. Included are many published maps and charts of geographic regions. There are also several groups of situation charts with special importance. Among these are: (a) Charts showing locations of Naval Forces in the Pacific and Atlantic areas, 1941-46; (b) Situation charts for the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor, for the Midway Battle, the Leyte Gulf Battle, the Solomons campaigns, and for those in North Africa and the European area; (c) Charts showing estimated locations of Japanese naval and ground forces, 1942-43.
A separate group consists of maps and charts representing North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, Southeast Asia in general, and the South China Sea that were used by naval commands during the Vietnam Conflict. An overall list is available. In addition, there is a card index to most of the World War II materials that was compiled by the World War II staff. Maps and charts are filed among other record collections in the Archives. Of note are charts and maps attached as enclosures in the World War II and Post 1946 Action and Operational Reports, in the World War II and Post 1946 Plans File, and in the National Intelligence Service's country survey series in the Post 1946 Command File.
