Scope and Content Note
These papers consist chiefly of correspondence, some still classified, speeches, and miscellaneous subject files. The material covers mainly the period 1954-1963, when Admiral Beakley commanded the Anti-Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, served on the Staff of OPNAV (Strategic Plans Division, Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Operations and Readiness), commanded the Seventh Fleet, and was assigned as a senior officer on the staff of the Atlantic Command and Atlantic Fleet. Documentation is included on USS Triton (SSRN-586) which performed the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe in 1960.
