Scope and Content Note
The papers contained in this collection consist of personal correspondence and notes from interviews that Commander Alden, a submarine officer, conducted for his book, The Fleet Submarine in the U.S. Navy, published by the Naval Institute Press.
The collection is arranged in two series. Series I, official and personal correspondence, includes correspondence with various individuals concerning the development of the fleet-type submarine. It is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Other correspondence is arranged chronologically in a miscellaneous folder.
The other material in this series consists of personal correspondence and notes on submarines from Rear Admiral Andrew I. McKee. This material is also arranged in chronological order. No quotation or citation of this correspondence is authorized without specific written approval from Commander Alden. In the last folder of this series are correspondence and a transcript of taped interviews with Rear Admiral Armand M. Morgan. This material is closed until the death of Admiral Morgan. No quotation or citation is authorized without specific written approval during Commander Alden's lifetime.
Series II contains a notebook produced by Fairbanks Morse Engine Division, Colt Industries, "Background Data on Fairbanks Morse Opposed Piston Engine Development for U.S. Naval Institute," which includes material on the development of submarine engines.
