In a shipboard task almost as ancient as the art of maritime voyaging, crewmen of the LST stow away the hawser as the landing craft moves down the Ohio.

 

On the Old Ohio

The newly launched LST moves down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh on her "shakedown cruise". In comparison to the modern war vessel is an old stern wheeler at the left, her two towering stacks putting black smoke into the sky.

With the aid of a giant crane, the huge bow section of a Landing Ship Tank is lifted into place in a Pennsylvania shipyard.
