Overview

On 5 August 1864, Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut led an 18-ship Union squadron into the Confederate bastion of Mobile Bay, Alabama. After exchanging fire with Fort Morgan, clashing with Admiral Franklin Buchanan’s fleet, and losing the monitor USS Tecumseh to a mine, the Union ships steamed forward across the minefield under Farragut’s orders. Once inside the bay, the squadron rammed and fired on the only Confederate ship still fighting—the armored CSS Tennessee—until she surrendered. The victory soon brought the forts guarding the bay’s entrance under Union control.
