- As part of Operation Noble Eagle, USNS Comfort was activated the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, in response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Comfort was pierside in Manhattan Sept. 14 - Oct. 1 where the ship's crew provided meals, care packages, housing, and medical and psychological services to volunteers and relief workers at ground zero.
